Here’s a trivia question for you: What 16-year-old competition has raised thousands of dollars to boost literacy in the Panhandle?
That answer – Brain Games, put on each spring since 1998 by Literacy Volunteers of the Eastern Panhandle – comes more easily than most at the team event, a friendly trivia showdown to be held next month in Berkeley County.
Organizers say Brain Games offers a fun way to raise needed funds for Literacy Volunteers, the volunteer organization that provides free tutoring to adults struggling with reading and for those learning English as a second language throughout Jefferson, Berkeley and Morgan counties.
Brain Games XVI starts at 1 p.m. at James Rumsey Technical Institute in Hedgesville. Teams check in starting at 12:15 p.m. and the competition is expected to wrap up around 4 p.m.
Signups are happening now. Teams that mail in registration forms by March 29 save $5 per person. The early bird fee is $25 per person while those registering March 30 or later must pay $30.
Teams must have at least three members and may have up to six. Area businesses sponsor many of the teams while others are composed of friends or family members.
This year’s Brain Grames will include the “Buy An Answer” feature where teams can give themselves a boost by ponying up an additional $5 to secure an additional correct answer in each of the four rounds of the competition.
Following each round, organizers post the running score for each team and at the contest’s end, the top three teams are awarded trophies.
Panhandle businesses unable or uninterested in competing in Brain Games still can help out by serving as sponsorships and by donating raffle items and door prizes, organizers say.
Other Brain Games highlights will include a silent auction, a book exchange and a snack shack where popcorn, soda and other treats will be for sale.
