Rams move to 4-0 in conference
TORONTO, Ohio — Shepherd kept its unbeaten WVIAC record intact this past weekend when it swept a doubleheader from Wheeling Jesuit.
The two games were moved to Toronto High School in Ohio after a scheduled doubleheader was washed out on Saturday in Wheeling.
Paul Hvozdovic had a complete game pitching performance when Shepherd won the opener, 5-4. Hvozdovic had a seven-inning, seven-hitter that featured nine strikeouts.
The Rams had leads of 3-0 and 5-1 before the Cardinals closed ther gap by scoring single runs in the last four innings.
Wheeling Jesuit stranded the tying run at third base when Hvozdovic retired the game’s last batter on an outfield fly out.
Ryan Messina and Tyler Thomas both had two hits with Kyle Porter reaching base four times and Chad Murphy reaching three times for the Rams. Hvozdovic won his third straight decision and improved to 3-2 overall.
The Rams won the nichtcap, 3-1, in eight innings with starting pitcher Davis Hall going seven strong innings in getting his third win of the season. Hall allowed only four hits and the run scored off him was earned. He fanned five and walked only two.
After Shepherd broke a 1-1 tie in the top of the eighth when Mark McCormick singled and T.J. Weisenburg doubled to begin a two-run inning. A Jake Cook single plated two runs giving the Rams a 3-1 lead.
Ryan Pansch pitched the eighth for the Rams, earning his first save of the year.
Shepherd was 4-0 in the WVIAC and 8-9 overall.
