Nailing down legislators
Vi Nguyen, who owns Vivo Day Spa in Harpers Ferry, says she remains hopeful that West Virginia lawmakers will OK House Bill 2906, a change in rules regarding nail techs that would make the Mountain State conform more with those in place in Virginia and many other states. While Nguyen is overworked and in need of a licensed nail tech to help out at her shop, she can’t hire her Vietnam-born mother because, despite years of experience, she has been unable to pass the licensing test, which is offered only in English. “I would love to have my mother’s help and she would love to have a job!” Nguyen said this week. “She has been in California the last several months looking for work and it has not been easy for her. Nail techs are everywhere there and there’s big competition for jobs.” Delegate Stephen Skinner introduced HB 2906, which is now before the House Government Organization committee.
