The Jefferson girls tennis team dropped a 5-2 decision to visiting Hedgesville to open its 2013 season.
After the Lady Eagles had posted wins in all four singles matches, Jefferson managed wins at No. 1 doubles with Shelby Stanton/Susanne Lindsay and at No. 3 doubles with Kaley Hoffman/Hunter Roll defeating their Hedgesville opponents.
Even with a singles win from McLain Lewis, Jefferson lost, 5-2, against St. Maria Goretti last Wednesday on the Jefferson courts.
Goretti’s Laura Winalski defeated Shelby Stanton, 8-5, at No. 1; Laura Clopper stopped Susanne Lindsay, 8-1, at No. 2; Monica Divinagracia beat Bailey Johnson, 8-4, at No. 3; and Jefferson’s Lewis was an 8-6 winner over Kristin Downing at No. 4. In doubles, Jefferson’s Kaley Hoffman/Hunter Roll defeated Emma Mullineaux/Nicole Downing, 8-0.
Musselman beat the Lady Cougars, 5-2. Susanne Lindsay had Jefferson’s lone singles win while Bailey Johnson/McLain Lewis won their doubles match.
In the four-school Jefferson Invitational, Jefferson defeated Hampshire, 7-0, and dropped a 4-3 decision to the Lady Gaels.
The Lady Gaels’ Laura Winalski was the individual singles champion with Jefferson’s Shelby Stanton finishing second. Winalski/Laura Clopper won the doubles title with Jefferson’s Stanton/Susanne Lindsay finishing as the runner-up duo.
St. Maria Goretti was the team champion.
