SHENANDOAH JUNCTION — The softball season-opener for Jefferson was on a bitter cold night, but was one that Jefferson warmed up some when it tamed visiting Berkeley Springs, 9-4, last Thursday.
With the temperature diving to about 27 degrees and the wind biting the players, neither side’s starting pitcher had much luck. Jefferson had a 5-3 lead after only two innings.
Despite Berkeley Springs’ three-run first off Shelby McTighe, Jefferson got a run back on an RBI hit from Alexandra Witt.
Jenna Witt took over on the mound in the second for the Lady Cougars. Jefferson took the lead with a four-run second as Kaitlyn Boyd and Jenna Witt had hits.
Jefferson’s final four runs came when Alexandra Witt, Brittany Jackson, Chelsea Shepherd and Boyd helped create a three-run fifth and then the Witts had hits to score a run in the sixth.
Jenna Witt was Jefferson’s winning pitcher.
