JHS baseball opens season on Thursday

With experienced starters at nearly every position, Jefferson begins its 2013 baseball season on Thursday when it travels to Hagerstown to play St. Maria Goretti at 4:30 p.m. on the little diamond tucked behind the school on Oak Hill Avenue in the city’s north end.

Following Thursday’s game, the Cougars are scheduled to open at home on Friday at 6 p.m. against Wyoming Area (Pa.) and play again at Sager Field on Saturday at 12-noon against Wyoming Area.

Coach John Lowery, Sr. has Casey Billmyer, Andrew King, and Andrew Grove back as infield starters. Matt Henshaw (catcher), outfielders Anthony DiAmario and Dennis Jackson and pitchers Blake Johnson and Sean Spotts also return from the 2012 team that won 24 games but could not repeat as the Sectional champion.

Brandt Petrie is also a possible infield starter and outfielder Matt Ballou should return after missing the schedule’s first four games.

The Cougars have 16 seniors on their 25 man roster.
