Jefferson splits four softball games

Hedgesville opened its softball season with an 8-3 win over visiting Jefferson last Tuesday night. The loss left Jefferson with a 1-1 record.

Hedgesville’s single runs in each of the first three innings gave it a 3-1 lead, but the Lady Cougars answered with two runs in the fifth to make it 3-3.

However, the Lady Eagles erupted for four runs in the fifth to take the lead for good at 7-3.

Courtney Layhew had three hits and Brenna Haught had two hits for the Eagles. Kaitlyn Boyd and Jenna Witt each clubbed a solo homer for Jefferson in its first loss of the season.

On Wednesday, Jefferson used its offense to defeat visiting Handley, 12-2, in a game abbreviated by the eight-run mercy rule.

On Thursday, visiting Musselman defeated the Lady Cougars, 9-6, on a cold afternoon in Shenandoah Junction.

Jefferson was 2-2 overall after the Musselman loss.
