CHARLES TOWN – New Jefferson County Sheriff Peter Dougherty will resign his position on the county board of education, he announced Tuesday after getting the thumbs up from county commissioners to be the county’s chief law enforcement officer.
The vacancy leaves the board of education with 45 days to choose a successor. “It has always happened that the board has been able to fill the position,” said Dougherty, who serves as president of the board.
Dougherty says he is proud of his 25 years of service to the board of education.
“I think what you want to do in public service is to leave it better than when you found it, and I can say that I think the board of education is in a better position than it was when I got there.”
