Three Jefferson seniors off to college

Jefferson High seniors Rynal Newman, Geoff Walker, and Darrod Doleman signed NCAA national letters of intent to play football at colleges within the state of West Virginia.

Newman was a defensive back/running back for the Cougars. He signed his letter to attend Alderson-Broaddus in Philippi.

The Battlers fielded a football team for the first time in over 50 years in 2012. They had an 11-game schedule as a club team instead of a sanctioned NCAA Division II team. The 2012 schedule consisted of club teams, college junior varsity teams, and ones without athletic scholarships. The record was 9-2.

The 2013 A-B schedule will consist of all varsity teams.

Alderson-Broaddus will have its new stadium and playing field in place for the upcoming 2013 season.

Battler coach Dennis Crennan has recruited Newman to be a defensive back.

Newman’s brother, Ryland, was a senior football player at Fairmont State in the 2012 season. Ryland played four years with the Falcons after graduating from Jefferson.

Walker signed his letter of intent to play at West Virginia State of the newly formed Mountain East Conference, a Division II league that has many of the schools that were members of the WVIAC.

At Jefferson, Walker was one of the team’s and area’s main pass receiving threats.

West Virginia State will have a first-year head coach in the 2013 season. The Yellow Jackets had a hard time winning the last few years in the WVIAC.

New coach Jon Anderson has recruited between 25 and 30 players in his first freshmen class in Institute.

Doleman also inked his national letter of intent to play collegiately at West Virginia State.

While at Jefferson, Doleman was used as a wide receiver and a defensive back. With both Doleman and Walker on the field at the same time, Jefferson did move through the air at times even though it had records of 1-9 in both 2012 and 2011.

Doleman intercepted two passes this past season and could be given his first lessons as a college player as a defensive back.

Many in-coming freshmen are redshirted their first year on campus. None of the three prospective 2013 Jefferson graduates has been told they might be redshirted for the 2013 season.

West Virginia State will be playing at Shepherd on Nov. 9, 2013. Alderson-Broaddus is not a member of the Mountain East Conference and will not be playing any games in this area.
