Seton Hill accepts baseball’s role of favorite

Coming off its third straight trip to the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional, Seton Hill is the WVIAC coach’s favorite to win the league’s 2013 baseball championship.

The Griffins have won the last three North Division titles and won over 40 games in 2012. They are ranked 13th in the nation in a pre-season poll.

Although Seton Hill was not the WVIAC tournament champion in 2012, it did well enough during the regular season to get an at-large bid to the Atlantic Region tournament. Shepherd was the 2012 WVIAC tournament champion and earned an automatic bid to the Atlantic Region.

In this year’s pre-season voting, the Griffins had 13 of the possible 15 first-place votes from the coaches.

Selected to finish second in the North Division was Shepherd and first-year Coach Matt McCarty. Alderson-Broaddus was picked to finish third in the North and the Battlers were followed in order by Pitt-Johnstown, Fairmont, Wheeling Jesuit, and West Liberty.

Concord drew the most points in the eight-team South Division. Following the Mountain Lions in order were West Virginia Wesleyan, Charleston, West Virginia State, Davis & Elkins, Ohio Valley, Bluefield, and Glenville.

Shepherd is scheduled to open its home schedule on Saturday, March 2 against Millersville of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference.
