MARTINSBURG — A collapsed first half where it scored only 11 points cost Washington its chances of winning a Class AAA, Region II, Section 1 girls basketball game against homestanding Martinsburg.
The Patriots had only five points in the first quarter and already trailed, 16-5. When Washington could add only six more points in the second quarter, it was behind, 24-11, at the half.
The Lady Bulldog lead ballooned to 20 points in the third stanza before the Patriots began a concerted rally that pared away much of the Martinsburg lead.
Washington outscored Martinsburg, 16-7, in the last period but the long Lady Bulldog lead had withstood the rally and was enough for a 49-43 win that propelled them into the Sectional finals vs. Hedgesville, a semifinal winner over Musselman.
Kieera Basey (14 points), Kiana Bullett (10), and Essence Underwood (eight) paced Martinsburg in scoring. Jackie Hess (14 points), and Alycia Lambert (11) were Washington’s two double-figure scorers.
The Patriots closed out the season with a 12-11 overall mark. Martinsburg took a 14-5 record against Hedgesville.
