Scholarship deadline comes Friday

MARTINSBURG – Officials with the Eastern West Virginia Community Foundation say high school seniors may apply online or by mail for more than 50 scholarships from $500 to $5,000 each.

The deadline to submit applications comes Friday. The foundation’s new software allows students to upload letters of reference, transcripts, essays and more.

Awards will be announced May 15 at the Donor Reception and Scholarship Recognition Ceremony at the Purple Iris in Martinsburg. This year’s event will be held the evening of May 15.

Details may be found at The foundation was founded in 1995 and serves Jefferson, Berkeley, Morgan, Hampshire and Hardy counties.

Play festival deadline Friday

CHARLES TOWN – Playwrights hoping to see their works staged here this summer as part of the Old Opera House’s annual New Play Festival have until Friday to postmark their submissions.

The three-day festival, which begins June 21, will showcase outstanding one-act plays. Playwrights also win a cash prize.

Saturday brings chili cookoff

MIDDLEWAY – Chili lovers can come out this weekend for Middleway Volunteer Fire Co.’s chili cookoff.

Doors open at 4 p.m. Saturday. Tasting cups, spoons and napkins will be provided. A craft fair also will be set up.

Business seminars planned for March, April

CHARLES TOWN – The Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce plans business seminars for March and April with Darla Gaige of Growth Media Services and Sandy Sponaugle of Platinum PR.

The sessions start at 9 a.m. at the Quality Hotel & Conference Center, 4328 William L. Wilson Freeway in Harpers Ferry.
