MARTINSBURG — The seniors on Martinsburg’s wrestling team were able to lead the Bulldogs to a 39-24 win over Jefferson last Wednesday at the Fieldhouse.
Travis Stely, Joseph Fernandez, and Andre Riggins — all seniors — had wins for the Bulldogs.
Riggins got a win over one of Jefferson’s most successful wrestlers — Lane Harder — at 285 with a pin in the third period.
Martinsburg actually won the first five matches and had a 24-0 lead before the Cougars rallied back and threatened to tie the score.
Jefferson’s Levi Spickler gained six points for the Cougars with a pin of Curtis Heck at 138 pounds. Josh Bryant was able to post a 14-10 win to draw the Cougars a little closer. With wins from Chris Yenchko and Shane Moore, Jefferson had almost evened the match. Moore registered a quick pin in just 59 seconds.
After the four-match flurry of wins, the Cougars only trailed by six points. But Martinsburg was able to close out the match in the end when Stely won at 170-pounds. After Stely’s win, the only match left was at 182 where the Cougars’ A. J. Pierson posted a win.
