SHENANDOAH JUNCTION – Coach Ben Merica’s Hedgesville girls team quickly assumed command in the first quarter of its eventual 68-29 win over Jefferson. The Lady Eagles led, 16-7, after one quarter and had advanced that margin to 35-15 by halftime.
In the second half, Hedgesville outscored the Lady Cougars, 33-14, to get the overwhelming Sectional win.
Kristen Nunn had 18 points and Carly Elliott added 12 more to the Hedgesville scoring column. Jefferson, which was limited to only nine field goals, made 11-of-17 free throws and never scored more than eight points in any quarter.
Hedgesville set the tone with its pressure defense, which would help cause 32 Jefferson turnovers by the game’s close. The Lady Eagles also outrebounded Jefferson, 38-23.
Jefferson was 1-15 with the loss. And Hedgesville was 10-7 overall.
