Darius Wayne Cook was found by police in the trunk of a car covered in red dye after police responded to a robbery at the Bank of Charles Town in Kearneysville
CHARLES TOWN — A man and a woman were arrested Tuesday shortly after robbing a bank in Kearneysville, according to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department.
Darius Wayne Cook, 27, of Martinsburg, and 28-year-old Candace Brooke Leber were taken into custody after being stopped by sheriff’s deputies at Wiltshire and Charles Town roads soon after the incident, which happened about 3:52 p.m. when Cook went into the Bank of Charles Town and demanded an undisclosed amount of money, police say.
Witnesses later told police they observed a dye pack exploding as Cook ran to a car driven by a woman identified as Leber, also of Martinsburg. During a search of the car, police found Cook in the trunk of the car, covered in red dye. Police say loose money was spread about in the trunk compartment.
Police say both Cook and Leber confessed to taking part in the robbery. Both were taken to Eastern Regional Jail, where each are being held on separate $300,000 bonds.
