FAIRMONT — With Ty Reynolds winning the bracket title at 106 pounds when he pinned Parkersburg’s Austin Spears in just 28 seconds and Tyler Cross taking the 126-pound championship with a 3-2 win in overtime over Ripley’s Lucas Simpkins, Washington High finished a close-up second in the prestigious Winner’s Choice wrestling tournament held in Fairmont last Friday and Saturday.
The Patriots had the team lead in points after Friday’s session.
While Reynolds and Cross were Washington’s two bracket champions, the Patriots also had 160-pound Dylan Ceravalo finish second and Ashby Heath finish third at 220 pounds. Ceravalo was stopped in the bracket finals, 5-2, by Jake Smith.
Tyler Sigler (120 pounds) was fifth, Jarod Jones (138) was eighth and R. J. Wilson was eighth at 182 pounds as Washington outpaced 31 of the other 32 teams that participated.
The team champion was Point Pleasant with 186 points. The Patriots totaled 169 points as the close-up runner-up.
Finishing third was Parkersburg (159 points), with Ripley (141 points) in fourth, and Shady Spring (130 points) in fifth.
