‘Wind’ in the forecast
SUMMIT POINT – It’s been nearly three quarters of a century since movie-goers first fell in love with “Gone With the Wind,” the supersized period romance starring Clark Gable, Vivien Leigh, Leslie Howard and Olivia de Havilland.
Saturday brings another chance to see the 1939 movie based on Margaret Mitchell’s massive novel about Scarlett O’Hara’s life in Georgia before, during and after the Civil War.
The South Jefferson Public Library at 49 Church St. in Summit Point hosts a free showing starting at 2 p.m. Library officials sweeten the deal with free popcorn and drinks.
For those up for a double-feature, there’s also a free showing of the 2012 animated favorite, “Ice Age 4: Continental Drift.” It starts at 11 a.m.

Comic opera this weekend
SHEPHERDSTOWN – Johann Strauss’s comic operetta, “Die Fledermaus,” comes to the stage this weekend.
A presentation of Shepherd University’s music department, the opera will debuts at 8 p.m. Saturday and will be performed again at 3 p.m. Sunday and twice more the following weekend, at 8 p.m. Feb. 8 and 9.
All performances happen at the university’s Frank Center for the Arts.
The operetta is perfect for winter, explains Rob Tudor, the school’s director of vocal activities and department chairman and the production’s director.
“It is performed traditionally in the winter because it’s such a bright and uplifting production,” Tudor said. “‘Die Fledermaus’ offers lively waltzes, festive dancing, grand pranks, beautiful costumes and mistaken identities in a way that the whole family will enjoy.”
Seating will be first-come, first-served, with the box office opening an hour prior to each performance.
Tickets cost $15 or $10 for faculty, staff, Shepherd alumni, seniors and students 18 and under. Admission is free for Shepherd students with Rambler ID and those with Friends of Music Gold and Silver MAC cards. For details, call 304-876-5555 or go to shepherd.edu/musicweb.
