SHENANDOAH JUNCTION — Jalen Smith’s 20 points and a free throw with no time left on the scoreboard clock by Mario Gonzalez were the most important happenings in Jefferson’s 48-47 boys basketball victory over visiting Park View (Va.) on Saturday afternoon.
Jefferson improved its overall record to 2-7 with the win over the Patriots from Sterling Park, Va.
Smith’s point total was nearly half of what Jefferson counted as a team. He went 4-for-5 from three-point range.
With the score even at 47-47, Gonzalez was fouled just before the last tenth of a second evaporated from the score clock. After missing the first free throw of a two-shot situation, Gonzalez made the second foul shot. And the Cougars had their first win of the 2012-13 season over a public school.
Gonzalez was able to score eight points. Josh Dudley also scored eight points for the Cougars.
