INSTITUTE — Struggling West Virginia State had one of its better games this season last Thursday when it outrebounded Shepherd, 50-36, and made 50 percent of its field goal attempts in a 93-75 win over the Lady Rams.
The loss was Shepherd’s third in four games and left it mired toward the bottom of the 15-school WVIAC with a 3-5 conference record and 4-8 overall mark. West Virginia State was only 4-4 in the conference and 4-7 overall.
Shepherd had Gabby Flinchum score 18 points in only 23 minutes on the floor while Rachel Johnson totaled 16 points and point guard Alex Tamez chipped in 14 points in 34 minutes of playing time.
Shepherd made 37 percrnt of its shots (28-for-75).
Jasmine Blanton led the Yellow Jackets with 27 points and was followed closely by Asia Greenleaf with her 20 points. India Taste added 16 points and Jordan Brock came off the bench to score 10 points.
Kashauna Cook had 12 rebounds and Greenleaf 10 for the Yellow Jackets.
Blanton went 12-for-14 from the foul line as West Virgina State finished making 20-of-25 free throws. Shepherd was 11-for-15 from the foul line.
West Virginia State was already in front, 49-37, by halftime and then continued to outpoint the Lady Rams in the second half.
