Blue Storm uses late free throws to edge Patriots

MERCERSBURG, Pa. — Mercersburg Academy scored the game’s last three points on free throws as the Blue Storm edged Washington’s girls basketball team, 61-58, last Tuesday.

Hanna Warfield made one free throw with about a minute left and then Sidney Reath made two more in the last seconds to clinch the Blue Storm win.

Warfield finished with 17 points, while Melody Gomez added 15 points, Teal Tasker another 14 points and Sarah Firestone 11 points. Gomez had 12 rebounds and Tasker claimed nine rebounds. The Blue Storm was 10-3 overall.

Alycia Lambert scored a team-high 16 points for the Patriots, who were 9-8 overall with the loss. Jackie Hess tossed in 13 points with Amber Curry finishing with nine points and Morgan Adams adding another eight points.

Mercersburg sprinted ahead, 22-12 after one quarter, but then was outscored, 24-14, in the second stanza leaving the teams even at 36-36 at the half. The Blue Storm outscored the Patriots, 18-8, in the third quarter, but then could add only seven points in the fourth period.
