Baseball coach’s home burns

SHEPHERDSTOWN – Jefferson High’s longtime baseball coach John Lowery and his wife Vicki weren’t home Friday evening when a fire severely damaged the second floor of their Shepherdstown home.

According to family, the cause of the blaze at 199 Berridge Drive in the Heatherfield subdivision isn’t known, but officials don’t suspect arson.

Firefighters from Berkeley and Jefferson counties as well as from neighboring Maryland responded to the fire, which was reported at about 6:45 p.m.

Lowery is West Virginia’’s most award-winning baseball coach, having led the Cougars to 10 state titles so far. Jefferson’s baseball team begins practice for the 2013 season next month.
