INWOOD — In the season opener for both girls teams, homestanding Musselman outscored Washington by 10 points in the second quarter and used that advantage to post a 44-37 win over the Patriots.
After Washington had taken an 11-7 lead at the close of the first period, the Lady Applemen outpointed the Patriots,16-6, in the next stanza to carry a 23-17 lead into halftime.
The low-scoring third quarter saw Musselman increase its lead to 31-23.
Even in winning, Musselman committed 26 turnovers as compared with Washington’s 21 turnovers.
In the fourth quarter, Washington got within four points when Kirsten Doleman had a three-point play and then climbed within four later on when Kenya Dozier scored inside.
But the Lady Applemen made eight free throws in 10 fourth-quarter attempts to ward off the Patriots.
Morgan Adams had 12 points for Washington. Brianna Caison totaled 24 points for Musselman.
