Lady Patriots speed past Handley, 59-30

Washington evened its early-season girls basketball record at 1-1 with a 59-30 win on its home floor against John Handley High from Winchester. Handley was 1-2 with the loss.

The Patriots, who opened the year with a close loss at Musselman, held a 34-20 lead by halftime.

Both sides had experienced ball handling and passing problems in the second quarter. Turnovers became numerous in both camps.

Kenya Dozier had nine points by halftime and Kirsten Doleman off the bench scored another six points in the half.

Neither squad did much scoring in the third quarter, but the Patriots took a 20-point lead into the final stanza.

The Patriots cemented the win by outscoring the Judges by seven points in the late going.

Handley had ruined any chance it had by making only 13 percent of its second-half shots. Washington made 31 percent of its last-half field goal attempts.

Dozier closed with 15 points. Jackie Hess finished with 10 points and Doleman chipped in with her nine points.

Washington had 22 more rebounds than the Judges. Dozier led the Patriots with her nine rebounds.
