BUCKHANNON — Once-beaten Buckhannon scored the last goal, breaking a 2-2 tie, in the Class AAA, Region II girl’s soccer finals to edge Washington by a goal. The Brooklyn Waddell goal sent the Buccaneers on to the state tournament as one of the Final Four teams remaining.
Washington actually scored the match’s first goal when Devyn Hosby made good use of Brianna Hester’s assist pass to give the Patriots a 1-0 lead after about seven minutes of the opening half.
But Buckhannon rallied back with the next two goals to assume a 2-1 lead. It was still 2-1 when the first half closed.
Washington drew even when Natalie Adams directed Erin Buckhannon’s free kick past the Buckhannon goalkeeper.
With the score knotted at 2-2, Waddell received an assist pass from Taylor Starkey and drove a hard shot off the crossbar that caromed into the Jefferson net.
Washington did not score again. And Buckhannon improved its record to 25-1-1 and advanced on to the Class AAA state tournament in Charleston. The state event had to be moved after a huge snowfall hit the Beckley area, original site of the state tournament.
Washington completed its season at 13-4-4.
