ONA — Cabell Midland ran away to the Class AAA boy’s cross country state championship and Morgantown did the same in the large-school girl’s division.
Led by senior Jacob Burcham, the Knights completed a tour de force over their home grounds with a miniscule team total of only 37 points. Cabell Midland’s Avery Campbell finished third overall to Burcham’s individual win. University was the team runner-up with 75 points.
Several disappointing individual performances caused by sickness left Jefferson in third with 111 points. Andrew Milliron was not one of them when he was fourth overall with a time of 16:00 as compared with Burcham’s meet-winning 14:59. The other six Jefferson runners were Ryan Graf (16th in 16:37), Zach Wiberg (19th in 16:43), Jackson Jacobs (21st in 16:51), Matt Royster (51st in 17:58), Jimmy Ross (73rd in 18:44), and Rhett Zillinger (79th in 19:35).
In the girl’s division, Morgantown had only 30 points to easily outdistance city rival University, the runner-up team with 90 points. Jefferson was ninth with 206 points.
Jefferson freshman Abby Colbert finished fifth overall and fourth among runners whose complete team was entered. Anya Wallace (27th), Emma Lindberg (47th), Malika Briggs (55th), and Emma Alquist (73rd) were Jefferson’s runners whose finish counted toward the team total.
Amelia Paladino (University) won the girl’s division race.
