CHARLESTON – Rep. Shelley Moore Capito has announced she will seek election to the U.S. Senate in two years following her landslide victory in 2012.
Sen. Jay Rockefeller has held the seat that will be contested in 2014 since 1984. He has not yet said whether he will seek re-election to a sixth term, but other Democrats are waiting in the wings if he does not.
In the statement announcing her bid earlier this week, Capito emphasized the important role of coal and other energy resources for the state economy and promised to fight against EPA regulations she sees as hurting the industry.
Capito said she decided to announce her candidacy two years before the election in order to bypass months of speculation and to allow others to plan accordingly.
