Patriots win 2 behind Newhouse’s return

SHENANDOAH JUNCTION — With the regular season almost gone, Washington and Jefferson played their second boy’s soccer match of the season.

Although there was little scoring in the 1-1 tie, several players emerged as leading lights with their play.

Freshman goalkeeper Becker Junkin wouldn’t allow Jefferson to pass him for much of the match. With the Cougars generally the more aggressive and offensive-minded team, it was Junkin who was credited with 11 saves in generally keeping Jefferson at bay.

Josh Newhouse played for the first time this season and gave the Patriots two early goals. Washington defeated Musselman 4-0 and begins Sectional play this week.

Junkins two saves in the last minutes kept it a 1-1 game.

Jefferson goalkeeper Matt Saghy also had an effective match in goal. Daniel Hepner had Washington’s one goal and Austin Doughty had Jefferson’s goal after an assist pass from Catolin Leon.

With Josh Newhouse scoring its first two goals, Washington moved past visiting Musselman, 4-0, in a match played at Marcus Stadium on Thursday.

Newhouse was playing in his first match this season after being injured in last year’s state championship game in Beckley.

A dislocated shoulder in the 2011 state championship match had sidelined Newhouse for the entire 2012 season until he finally was given medical clearance to play against Musselman.

The regular season had left only the matches against Musselman and Morgantown. Newhouse made his presence felt in both those matches as he scored goals and the Patriots won both times.

Newhouse’s first goal against Musselman came only 54 seconds into the opening half. Eleven minutes later he scored again. And Newhouse’s first action in his senior year occured on Senior Night.

Washington’s other two goals were provided by Daniel Bouchoc and Ben Capriolo. The Patriots had assumed a four-goal lead by halftime.

Washington completed its regular season with a 4-2 road win against Morgantown High on Saturday in the college city. Josh Newhouse had Washington’s lone goal when the Mohigans led, 2-1, at halftime. Myles Newhouse had two second-half goals and Bouchoc had the other as the Patriots outscored Morgantown, 3-0, in the last half.

Both county schools have Sectional trourney matches this week with Washington hosting Hedgesville at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 18 and Jefferson possibly playing on Thursday at Martinsburg at 7 p.m. if it defeated Musselman on Tuesday, Oct. 16.
