Jefferson boys stopped in Sectional

In the opening round of the Class AAA, Region II, Section 1 boys soccer tournament, it was Jefferson moving past Musselman, 6-1, in a match played in Shenandoah Junction.

The victory sent the Cougars (6-5-5 overall) to Cobourn Field in Martinsburg to face top-seeded and once-beaten Martinsburg.

Jefferson posted its third win of the season over the Applemen.

Leon and Austin Ogden had first-half goals as the Cougars moved to a 2-0 lead at the intermission. Ogden had an assist on Leon’s goal.

In the second half, Jefferson added four more goals to steadily pull away from the visiting Applemen. Leon scored his second goal of the night and his lead was followed by Tucker Ryan, Brett Stuart, and Ben Howard.

Stuart had an assist. Ogden assisted on Leon’s second-half goal.

Near the close of the second half, Musselman got its lone goal from Brandon Sandy.

In the tournament semifinals, Martinsburg derailed the Cougars, 4-1, and ended their season. Jefferson actually had a 1-0 lead on a successful penalty kick by Pelle Tracey.

But two goals from Tristen Reid and a goal each from Gage Hulbert and Christian Munoz sent the Bulldogs into the Sectional finals against Hedgesville.
