Cougars take first five places in tri-meet

ZOAR — In a three-school cross country meet held at Sam Michaels Park, it was the Jefferson boys team getting five runners home before any of the competition could complete the distance run.

Jefferson finished with 15 points — the best a team can do in a meet of any size. Ryan Graf, Andrew Milliron, Jackson Jacobs, Zach Wiberg, and Rhett Zillinger gave the Cougars a sweep of the event’s first five places.

Washington High finished with 58 points and Martinsburg had 70.

Washington’s best finish was by sixth-place runner Joe McCormick. Jefferson’s Jimmy Ross and Matt Royster finished seventh and eighth in the individual runner standings.

In the girls bracket where the same three schools competed, Jefferson freshman Abby Colbert was the individual winner and the teams finished in the same (1) Jefferson, (2) Washington, (3) Martinsburg order.

Washington’s Destiny Harrison was second overall and then came Jefferson’s Anya Wallace, Emma Lindberg, and Malika Briggs. Jefferson’s team scoring was completed by the ninth-place finish of Emma Alquist.

Completing the course before Alquist was Washington’s Emily Franklin, who was sixth overall.
