Jefferson recovered sufficiently from an unusual loss to Martinsburg to post consecutive boys soccer wins over Musselman and Buckhannon. The Cougars blanked the Applemen, 3-0, last Thursday at home and followed that success with a 3-0 shutout win over Buckhannon on Saturday.
In the win over Buckhannon, Brett Stuart had the first goal about 15 minutes into the match. Catalino Leon had a second-half goal and an assist. Jack Barrat had Jefferson’s other goal with his header.
Matt Saghy was Jefferson’s goalkeeper in both shutouts. His efforts were helped out by the play of Cougar defensemen Hunter Koppenhaver, Pelle Tracey, Sam Wight, and Don Boucher.
An “own goal” scored by Jefferson was the only “offense” that counted when once-beaten Martinsburg achieved a 1-0 boys soccer win over visiting Jefferson at Cobourn Field last week.
The Bulldogs improved to 11-1-4 overall and Jefferson went to 4-5-4.
The match’s only goal happened when Martinsburg’s James Myers made a corner kick in front of the Jefferson goal and the ball eventually caromed off a Cougar player and into the goal for an “own goal” against the visitors.
Jefferson’s best opportunity came on a free kick that missed late in the second half. Martinsburg had 11 shots and Jefferson had five.
