Washington gained its first match win of the 2012 season when it trimmed Jefferson, 3-1, on Thursday night in Shenandoah Junction.
The Patriots were 1-5 overall with the match victory. The Lady Cougars had an identical 1-5 overall record with the loss to their county rivals.
All three games of the Washington vs. Hedgesville volleyball match were enticingly close, but the Patriots dropped each of them.
The Lady Eagles made the most of their scoring streaks while putting the finishing touches on their 3-0 win over the host Patriots.
Washington was 0-5 with the loss while the Lady Eagles advanced to 4-1-1 overall.
The three game scores favoring Hedgesville were 25-21, 25-22, and 26-24.
The Lady Eagles had to score the last two points in the third game to ease away from a 24-24 tie.
All the games were similar in that Hedgesville had early leads that became more substantial, but then Washington made solid comebacks . . . only to eventually fall just short.
Elizabeata Leinhard and Lea Cook both had six kills for the Patriots.
Washington has its next match on Thursday at 7 p.m. at home against Millbrook.
The Patriots will travel to Cumberland on Saturday to participate in the all-day Fort Hill Tournament. On Tuesday, Sept. 25, the Patriots will host Sectional opponent Martinsburg.
Washington will try to build on the first win of the season it acheived against Jefferson.
