HAGERSTOWN, Md. — Opening the 2012 volleyball season on the road in Hagerstown against St. Maria Goretti, the Jefferson girls defeated the homestanding Lady Gaels, 3-0.
Jefferson opened the match with a 25-14 win in the first game. The Lady Cougars then took the second game, 25-20, and made it three games in a row by winning Game Three, 26-24.
The match was also the first of the season for the Lady Gaels.
Freshman Mallory Jackson had eight kills and two service aces for the Lady Cougars. Sophomore Hunter Slivka was able to contribute seven kills, two service aces, and three digs to the winning cause. Senior Molly Langland was credited with 12 assists and had two service aces. Junior Alexis Staubs had two more service aces.
First-year Jefferson coach Ryan Mills sent her team against Handley High the next night in the first home court match of the season. Handley won that match, 3-0, to improve its record to 4-1. Jefferson was 1-1.
Mills has taken over as the volleyball coach after Sandy Hayes left after coaching only the 2011 season.
The Lady Cougars have a an 11-player roster this season that has only two seniors in Molly Langland and Megan Hovis. The juniors on this year’s squad are Miranda Day, Alexis Staubs, Dani Langley, and Chloe Rutherford.
Hunter Slivka and Ellie Williams are the two sophomores available to Mills in her first season. Three freshmen — Mallory Jackson, Maddy Nace, and Kenzie Chapman are Jefferson’s youngest players this season.
