CHARLESTON (AP) — A veteran Hardy County high school English teacher will represent West Virginia in the National Teacher of the Year competition.
East Hardy High School teacher Michael Funkhouser was named West Virginia Teacher of the Year during a ceremony Wednesday night in Charleston. He will receive an educational technology package worth nearly $15,000, cash awards from Mountain State Blue Cross/Blue Shield and Horace Mann Insurance, and the use of a Toyota car for a year.
Funkhouser has been a teacher for more than 30 years.
Hardy County Superintendent Barbara Whitecotton says Funkhouser is a caring and committed teacher who goes beyond the textbook to reach students.
