MORGANTOWN — Former WVU basketball player Da’Sean Butler has joined the Mountaineers as a graduate assistant coach on Bob Huggins’ staff. Butler last played in the 2009-10 season when WVU reached the Final Four of the NCAA tournament. He scored over 2,000 points — only the third player in Mountaineer basketball history to accomplish that number.
Butler was injured in the Final Four semifinals against Duke.
Huggins is pursuing a European player, Volodymyr Gerun from the Ukraine, as a possible 13th scholarship player for the upcoming season. Gerun is attending a basketball academy in the Canary Islands. The 6-foot-9, 205-pound center has played for the Ukraine 18-and-under team in international competition. He led that team in scoring and rebounding.
The NCAA Clearinghouse would have to rule on Gerun’s immediate eligibility and he would have to obtain a visa in order to play this season.
