CHARLESTON (AP) — A Charleston man will spend up to 30 years in prison for the death of a boy who was hit by a car while trying to get help for his mother.
Media outlets report that a Kanawha County judge sentenced 22-year-old Ethan Chic-Colbert on Wednesday.
A jury convicted Chic-Colbert last month on child neglect and domestic battery charges.
Prosecutors say Chic-Colbert dragged Lynitrah Woodson out of a vehicle and beat her on Interstate 77 in Charleston on March 4. Woodson’s son, 11-year-old Jahlil Clements, was hit by a car as he tried to flag down a passing vehicle.
Chic-Colbert told Circuit Court Judge Duke Bloom during Wednesday’s hearing that he was wrong. But he said the boy’s death wasn’t his fault.
