Trial to begin in Kanawha sniper-style slaying case

CHARLESTON (AP) — A man charged with three sniper-style slayings that rattled Kanawha County in 2003 is going on trial.

Media outlets report that jury selection is scheduled Monday in Kanawha County Circuit Court for Shawn Lester’s trial.

Lester is charged with first-degree murder in the fatal shootings of Jeanne Patton, Okey Meadows Jr. and Gary Carrier.

All three victims were shot outside convenience stores. At the time, the shootings appeared to be random and came close on the heels of similar sniper-style slayings in the Washington, D.C. area. Prosecutors later said the shootings were drug-related.

Circuit Court Judge Duke Bloom has prohibited everyone associated with the case from talking to the media. Bloom issued the gag order last week after Lester told WSAZ-TV in a jailhouse interview that he’s innocent.
