LEETOWN – One of the booths at the Jefferson County Fair last week sought to teach residents a very important lesson about the importance of installing, testing and maintaining smoke detectors in the home.
Local fire companies have each donated $100, along with $600 donated by a local State Farm Insurance Agent, in order to bring free smoke detectors to all residents who need them. Residents who signed up at the fair will receive a visit from their fire department, who will ensure that the smoke detector is properly installed and tested.
Among the volunteers last week was Lisa Burch, whose pregnant daughter, Jessica Cave, and young grandson, Dominic, perished in a Shenandoah Junction fire in January. There was no smoke alarm installed in the trailer where the fire took place.
Residents who have not yet signed up for a free smoke detector can contact their local fire department.
