Reduced to a shell of its early-summer roster, the Jefferson County Wildcats were eliminated in two games in the West Virginia Area 5 Senior American Legion tournament also involving Berkeley Post 14, Romney Post 91, Ridgeley Post 136, and Potomac Valley Post 64.
Berkeley Post 14, with high school or college players from Martinsburg High, Musselman High, and Hedgesville High, won the tournament by finishing with only one loss. The Knights will enter the Senior American Legion state tournament today in Wheeling.
Berkeley Post 14 and Romney were the last two unbeaten teams when Friday’s play began. The Knights defeated Romney on Friday and could have wrapped up the Area 5 title on Saturday against the same team. But Romney defeated the Knights on Saturday forcing a championship game on Sunday.
The Knights rallied in the late innings in Sunday’s game to overcome a deficit and win, 12-8, and with it the Area 5 crown.
The Wildcats team from Jefferson County’s two high schools lost a 3-0 decision in the opening round to Romney. In posting the shutout, Romney’s Garrett Crawford fanned 11 and allowed only five hits to the Wildcats. Dennis Jackson and Matt Ballou pitched for the Wildcats.
In the loser’s bracket, the Wildcats were eliminated from the Area tournament when they dropped a 7-4 decision to Ridgeley Post 136, a team whose roster was comprised mainly of players from Frankfort High School in Mineral County.
