SHENANDOAH JUNCTION — With Rachel Ransom scoring two goals and Maria Russo snapping a second half tie with her goal, the Jefferson girls soccer team opened its season at home on Saturday with a 3-2 win over University High.
Ransom opened the scoring with her first goal that came about midway through the first half. Just minutes later, the Hawks’ Elizabeth Custer evened it at 1-1 when she passed Jefferson goalkeeper Shelbie Spenser, who had stopped a number of shots up until that point.
Not long after Custer had scored for University, Ransom got loose and sailed her shot past the University keeper for another one-goal Jefferson lead at 2-1.
The Lady Cougar lead remained at 2-1 at the close of the first half.
The first scoring in the second half came from University’s Custer whose goal made it 2-2.
Finally, Russo (one of the four returning seniors on the 2012 team along with Ransom, Kiersten Barnholt, and Stella Barrat) gave the Lady Cougars a 3-2 lead that would hold up for a season-opening win.
There was no more scoring after Russo’s second-half goal.
University was 0-1-0 after losing its opener while the Lady Cougars were 1-0-0.
