Boot drive and barbecue: Blue Ridge Mountain Volunteer Fire Department will be having a boot dive and barbecue event on Saturday starting at 9 a.m. Pulled pork, cole slaw, boardwalk fries and fresh-squeezed lemonade will be on the menu.
Birding trips: The Potomac Valley Audubon Society will sponsor birding trips Saturday and Sept. 5. The trips are free and open to anyone with an interest. No pre-registration will be required. Labor Day picnic: The Shepherdstown Community Club’s annual community Labor Day picnic at Morgan’s Grove Park will begin at 2 p.m. Monday. While food is provided at nominal cost, guests are encouraged to bring a side dish to share. The Rohrerville Band will perform. Speakers will be Jefferson County Commissioner Lyn Widmyer and Diane Melby of Shepherd University.

Children’s nature walk: The Potomac Valley Audubon Society will offer a children’s nature walk along the C&O Canal Sept. 8. The walk will be for children ages 6 to 9 and will last from 9 a.m. until noon. It will start in the large C&O Canal parking lot on Canal Road, three-10ths of a mile south of the Shepherdstown/Sharpsburg, Md. bridge. There is a $5 fee for each child. Tennis fundraiser: The West Virginia University Hospitals-East City Hospital Foundation will sponsor its ninth-annual tennis classic on Sept. 8 at Saint James School in Saint James, Md. Registrants must be 18 years old by Sept. 1. Registration begins at 8 a.m. at the St. James School tennis courts, with play to begin at 9 a.m. The individual player entry fee is $100.
