Wait is over: WVU now officially part of Big 12

MORGANTOWN (AP) — The wait in Morgantown is over. As of Sunday, West Virginia University is officially part of the Big 12 Conference.

The clock on WVU’s official athletics web site steadily counted down this week, while crews painted the new conference logo on Mountaineer Field.

President Jim Clements and Athletic Director Oliver Luck will join coaches, student-athletes and others for cookout to celebrate the occasion. Big 12 Commissioner Bob Bowlsby will attend the private event, too.

WVU left the Big East Conference earlier this year after a messy lawsuit.

Texas Christian University also officially is joining the conference on Sunday.

The Mountaineers open their 2012 season at home Sept. 1 against Marshall.
