W.Va. Dems rescheduling annual dinner after storms

CHARLESTON (AP) — The storms that battered West Virginia have the state’s Democrats postponing their main annual fundraising event.

Party officials did not immediately announce a new date for the Jefferson-Jackson Dinner. It had been scheduled for Aug. 11 in Charleston.

Democratic Party Chairman Larry Puccio cited the widespread damage that knocked out power to more than 600,000 homes and businesses across West Virginia.

An estimated 74,000 households remained in the dark Monday.

Puccio said the party hopes to keep former congressional leader and presidential candidate Dick Gephardt as the rescheduled dinner’s keynote speaker. The event also will feature Outstanding Democrats of the Year awards.

But those who pre-purchased tickets can receive full refunds. Puccio also suggested donations to the Volunteer West Virginia Food Drive or local charities for storm relief.
