At Jefferson High, second-year golf coach Alexander White has a team with no seniors . . . but plenty of experienced players returning from last year.
Alex Tran, Bryce Lushbaugh, Quentin Foust, and Vincent Chicchirichi all played on the 2011 team. And all four are still underclassmen as the Cougars prepare for this season that begins on August 1 with the Tri-County tournament at The Woods near Hedgesville.
“I had them for three weeks at the end of June and also have two more players that could be among the top four this season, “ said White. “Having the four returnees for this year and next year should help me evaluate them and have them improve as they get more experience.”
The two players White didn’t have last year are freshman Patrick Glenn and junior Lauren Simpson. “I’m looking for Patrick to shoot some low numbers and for Lauren to be a solid competitor against the boys on the other teams,” White said of his newest team members.
White said he expects to hold a team practice on Monday, July 30 and then have all the candidates play a round on Tuesday, July 31 to determine the six players he will take to The Woods for the Tri-County match on Wednesday, August 1.
“There could be another player or two who I haven’t seen yet come out for the team. I will use the practice round to determine the players for the first match.”
Each school can use six players in a given match with only the four lowest scores counting toward the team score during the regular season. Only the three lowest scores are counted during both Regional and State Tournament play.
The Cougars had Jesse Fuellhart, Jake Mellow, and Cody McDowell as their seniors last year.
White has five juniors and freshman Glenn as the core of the 2012 team. And he waits to see if the expected improvement takes place, beginning with the Tri-County match.
