FORT ASHBY (AP) — An investigator says an apartment building fire that killed three people in Fort Ashby started in a second-floor hallway.
Patrick Barker with the state Fire Marshal’s Office tells The Cumberland Times-News that the cause of the July 13 fire remains undetermined.
The victims have been identified as 63-year-old Richard Sherry, 43-year-old Brenda Whiteman and her 20-year-old-son, Zachary Whiteman.
The building housed nine apartments, along with a pharmacy and a restaurant on the first floor.
Fort Ashby Volunteer Fire Chief Greg Long has said the fire destroyed the second floor and displaced 15 to 20 people who lived in the building. The restaurant and pharmacy sustained extensive smoke and water damage.
