Charles Town Mayor Peggy Smith accepts a portrait of World War I veteran Frank Buckles from Frederck, Md. artist Kellen M. “Buck” Musser Tuesday at City Hall. The oil painting, which took Musser about 10 hours to complete will hang on display at the city’s offices, while prints of the work will be donated to the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars, along with Buckles’ daughter, Susannah Buckles, of Charles Town. Musser, who has donated works to other area municipalities took up painting after returning home following a stay in the Philippines. He was joined for the donation ceremony by his nephew, U.S. Marine lance Cpl. Chad Armstrong of Bunker Hill. Buckles was the last surviving American veteran of World War I until his death last year at age 110.
