WAR (AP) — Authorities say robbery may have been a motive in the death of a southern West Virginia mayor.
War Mayor Tom Hatcher was found dead in his home Monday. McDowell County Sheriff’s Deputy Ron Blevins says Hatcher’s sister-in-law and her brother were arrested late Thursday.
The Bluefield Daily Telegraph reports Rebecca Lynn Hatcher of War and Earl Click of Grundy, Va., are each charged with first-degree murder.
Chief Deputy Mark Shelton said Friday that $1,100 was taken from the home, possibly for the purchase of drugs.
Hatcher is being held without bond pending a hearing. Click is being held in the Southwest Virginia Regional Jail system and will be extradited to McDowell County.
The 72-year-old Hatcher had served as mayor of War since 1997.
