MORGANTOWN (AP) — Morgantown is still battling street and trash bin fires despite an exodus of thousands of West Virginia University students for the summer.
Fire Marshal Ken Tennant tells The Dominion Post that 27 fires have been set since May 13.
Most of the fires occurred in the student-dominated Sunnyside area.
Tennant says he doesn’t know why the fires are continuing since WVU’s spring semester ended.
Sunnyside residents Chris Alvarez and Nikki Peterson believe the fires are due to more students taking summer courses at WVU.
As of last week, WVU spokeswoman Diana Mazzella says 10,650 students were enrolled in summer courses, about 2 percent more than during the same period last year.
