WEST UNION (AP) — Authorities are investigating the abandonment of more than 30 sick dogs along a road near the Doddridge-Ritchie county line.
Two women found the dogs Sunday afternoon along Sugar Run Road in Doddridge County and brought 21 canines to the Ritchie County Humane Society.
Shelter director Kitty Ray tells WBOY-TV that the dogs had extreme cases of mange and long fingernails. She says humane officers and volunteers found 10 more dogs at the site. One was dead.
Doddridge County Animal Control Officer Rodney Trent says he has seen dogs in similar condition along the road.
