PROCIOUS (AP) — A former candidate for U.S. Senate and the state attorney general’s office is facing charges of shooting a man in the leg.
State police say Hiram Lewis was charged with malicious wounding and wanton endangerment with a firearm following Wednesday’s incident in Clay County.
Lewis is accused of shooting Stephen Bogart at a residence in Procious.
Lewis denies the charges. He told WCHS-TV that Bogart broke into his home and threatened him.
Bogart told State Police that he lives at the residence.
Lewis was being held Thursday at the Central Regional Jail on $100,000 bond.
In 2004, the Republican narrowly lost a bid to unseat Democrat Attorney General Darrell McGraw. He made unsuccessful runs for U.S. Senate in 2006 and for attorney general in 2008.
