Annual Chamber of Commerce banquet: The Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce will be hosting the 53rd Annual Chamber Banquet on Wednesday at the Skyline Terrace at the Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races. The Spirit of Jefferson will be honoring the Outstanding Citizen of the Year award. Guest speaker for this year’s banquet will be Rick Adams from United Bank. Social hour is from 6 to 7 p.m. with dinner served at 7 p.m. and awards to follow. The banquet is a reservations and a pre-pay required event, with limited seating; Reservations prior to the event are required. For questions, call the chamber office at 304-725-2055.

Blood drive: 11 to 5 p.m., Friday. City Hospital, Martinsburg.

Community Ministries events: Jefferson County Community Ministries will be open on Saturday for two events. The first will be from 9 a.m. to noon to receive donations of food and clothing for later distribution to the food pantry and clothing closet. The second event will be from 1 to 2:30 pm and will be an orientation for all persons who might be interested in volunteering their time and talents. For questions, call 304-725-3186.

Free electronics recycling: St. Andrews Community Mt. Center, 58 Mission Rd., Harpers Ferry. Saturday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Electronics recycling is also available at the Kearneysville transfer station Monday through Friday from 8 to 4 p.m. for more information, www.jcswa.com.

Free summer reading program: The summer reading program at the Bolivar/Harpers Ferry library is a great way to keep kids and teens reading during the summer. Children, teens and adults can register until Saturday. The finale party for teens will be July 28 at noon. Discuss your favorite books, play games, and win prizes. Food and drinks provided. During the month of July checkout, read, and return books. For each book you read you will receive a raffle ticket — up to three per week — to enter a drawing for the prize(s) of your choice. The adult summer reading program book review potluck for adults will be held Aug. 3 at 6 p.m. Participants will review books they have read this summer, eat some excellent food, and win fabulous door prizes. Please bring food to share. Drinks, silverware, plates will be provided. We also offer weekly craft programs during the month of July. Sign up begins June 30. Summer reading program kick-off: Bolivar/Harpers Ferry library. Free fun for the whole family. Saturday, 10 a.m. to noon in library parking lot. Live Music by Adrienne and Tara. Moon bounce, Swirly Curl tattoos, sand art, Chick-fil-a Cow, giant wonder bubbles, snow cones and hot dogs. Enter a drawing to win two tickets to the “Hunchback of Notre Dame” donated by the Old Opera House. Critters and Conservation will present an educational program with live animals and reptiles.

Cookout to support hospice: Bavarian Inn, Shepherdstown, July 6 starting at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $50 per person. The evening will also include a silent auction featuring select, upscale items. Proceeds benefit Hospice of the Panhandle. Make reservations by calling 304-876-2551.

Stauffer’s Marsh birding trip: The Potomac Valley Audubon Society will sponsor a birding trip to its Stauffer’s Marsh Nature Preserve in Berkeley County on July 7. The event is free and anyone with an interest is welcome to come along. Pre-registration is recommended but not required. Jefferson Co. Fair pageant registration and rehearsal: Jefferson County Fairgrounds, July 14. 9 a.m. — registration for “Little Miss Jefferson County” and “Junior Miss Jefferson County”; 10:30 a.m. — registration for “Miss Jefferson County.”

Children’s asthma camp: Camp Catch Your Breath will hold a week-long camp July 22 to 27 for children ages 8 to 13 who suffer from asthma. The camp will be held at Jackson’s Mill 4-H Camp. Delaware shore birding trip: The Potomac Valley Audubon Society is sponsoring a birding trip along the Delaware shore Aug. 3 through 5. Anyone with an interest is welcome to participate, including children. There is no fee but participants will have to cover their own travel expenses and make their own room reservations. Participants should plan to wear comfortable walking or hiking boots; bring along bug spray to ward off ticks, mosquitoes and gnats; and bring water and, as necessary, a hat, sunscreen or rain gear.
